Influence

Progressive Martial Arts Bacerra Method is the eclectic blend of several different martial arts. It is not a style of martial art, but an interpretation of all I have learned so far. I have had many teachers over my ten years of martial arts experience, giving me a greater understanding of the philosophies undergirding the martial arts and the universal principles behind the physical expression of each style. PMABM is principle-based which means there is less focus on specific techniques and more focus on the principle of efficient combative movement. It also means that there are no stylized forms to memorize. And because it is based on natural body movement, it is easier to learn. Many martial arts schools, even some eclectic ones, only emphasize the differences between each style and do not bring all the similarities together. PMABM not only brings these similarities together, but helps each individual develop his own style, so that in the end, no two PMABM students will look exactly alike. The following are the styles I have learned influencing the development of PMABM:

Matsubayashi-Ryu Shorin-Ryu Okinawan Karate-do
I studied this as my introduction to the martial arts. The founder, Shoshin Nagamine, said that each kata (prearranged set of fighting forms) is a martial art style unto itself. He too learned from many teachers and brought together what he experienced over the years to create his own method of teaching karate.

Brazilian Capoeira
Chinese Wu-shu

Used for warm-ups and aerobic exercises. These are great to make the body limber while readying it for combative movement.

Jeet Kune Do Concepts
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Pencak Silat Mande Muda
Yang Tai Chi Chuan

I use the principles from these arts mainly for use in empty-hand combat, although weapons are involved in all but Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Balintawak Arnis Cuentada
Filipino Martial Arts
Kobujutsu
Epee Olympic fencing

I use the principles from these arts for weapons training. The group system of Balintawak Arnis is the only memorized technique sequence required in PMABM.

Ki Chuan Do
Right now I am training under Grandmaster John Perkins, a former New York City police officer. He has experience in a number of martial arts and survived many altercations on-duty that enabled him to create a different, more practical approach to martial arts training. The main principle taught is called "guided chaos," which acknowledges the mayhem of physical assault and trains the body to master movement in an unpremeditated and unchoreographed way.
